Charles Villiers Stanford (1952-1924) Sonata No.3 "Britannica (1918) Paul Fritts organ, 2017 (IV/70) Basilica of the Sacred Heart, University of Notre Dame Kola Owolabi, organ David Marshall, audio and video recording I. Allegro non troppo ma con fuoco II. (Benedictus): Larghetto III. Allegro molto e ritmico Charles Villiers Stanford's five organ sonatas, reflect his mature compositional style, influenced by the symphonic works of Johannes Brahms. Stanford had been responsible for the English premieres of Brahms' Alto Rhapsody and Symphony No. 1, during his years as director of the Cambridge University Musical Society. Sonata No. 3 “Britannica” makes use of two ancient English hymn tunes. The 17th century melody ST. MARY forms the basis of the first movement, while the third movement incorporates William Croft’s early 18th century tune, HANOVER. Both outer movements are cast in sonata form. In the first movement, the hymn tune is transformed to the point that it is barely recognizable, with short motives from each phrase being developed to create new melodies. In the third movement, the phrases of the hymn tune are more recognizable, culminating in a full statement of the tune during the coda.
