We took a little trip down Barton Creek Aka The Greenbelt in Austin, TX. Normally, there is not enough water here to make for a great paddle, but after the rains a few weeks ago, it was up so we decided to go for it. It is a beautiful pristine creek flowing through the Heart of Austin. Clear water and abundant wildlife made for an awesome trip. The upper portions had very few people which made it feel like we were in the middle of nowhere. We did have a little map-miscalculation that ended turning our 9 mile trip into an 8 hour ordeal. I thought we were a quarter of the way from the end when I realized we weren't even to the halfway mark yet. This forced us to have to kick it into high gear so we would have too much ground to cover in the dark of night. The first half of the trip was amazing and with very few portages. The back half however, is where the tough got going. Some of the portages were not bad and you could easily walk the kayak through the shallow water. Others were much more difficult and forced us to climb around and lift our yaks over the rocks. It really began to take its toll late in the day when we started getting exhausted and running low on water. We could have pulled out at one of the many trailheads and caught an Uber back to the pick up, but we were determined to finish the stretch. Another thing that made this trip longer than expected, is when we were mapping out the river miles, we didn't account for the many switchbacks causing us to cross back and forth across the river. This added many miles that we were not expecting. ALWAYS BRING A HEADLAMP WITH YOU ON A KAYAK! You never know what might happen and being stuck out on the river after dark with no light can be a dangerous situation. Luckily as the sun went down, we were on the final stretches of river which did not have many portages. We were thankful because we were both smoked from having so many earlier in the day. All in all it was a good trip. Took some work but the views were amazing. I wouldn't recommend this river trip unless there is well over 100 cfs flowing through there. We hit it about 70-80 cfs and a few more inches of water would have helped tremendously. Jason Mercer ACK @mercermademedia
