OHBM 2024 Roundtable Session: Maximizing the clinical utility of small-scale neuroimaging studies Description: Recent studies have pointed to the need for large samples, i.e., thousands of individuals, to study many brain-behavioral associations (Marek et al., 2022; Greene et al., 2022). This has led to questions from the neuroimaging community about the utility and impact of smaller-scale studies. These questions are particularly relevant for translational work, where obtaining larger samples can be prohibitively expensive. Here, we explore how to continue transformative research on substance use and mental disorders in smaller datasets in a way that produces robust, generalizable models. To this end, we highlight novel approaches by which smaller, focused studies could be deployed to maximize their impact – for example, through enhanced behavioral phenotyping, dense sampling neuroimaging, and strategies such as meta-matching. The presentations will be followed by a discussion among panelists about future directions for translational applications of neuroimaging. Problem with this video?
