In Queensland, if you accumulate 12 or more demerit points within a 3-year period on an open licence, you will be sent an 'Accumulation of demerit points – notice to choose' by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). The notice to choose gives you two options: Option 1: Accept a licence suspension for a specific period (typically 3 months or longer, depending on the number of points accumulated). Option 2: Elect a 12-month good driving behaviour period, during which you must avoid accumulating more than 1 demerit point. If you accumulate 2 or more points during the good behaviour period, your licence will be suspended for double the original suspension period.
