A brief comparison between the recoil of the 9mm Luger and .40 Smith & Wesson. Both are very popular and widely used by civilian, military, and law enforcement. Here is a look at the recoil between the two with similar guns and ammo. Your individual results may vary, do your research and make your decisions wisely. Be wary of forums. At the time of this video, I weighed around 120 pounds and considered myself an average shooter. I have gained weight since, and although I have practiced more, I still do not consider myself an expert. A brief history of the two: 9mm Luger was invented in 1902 by George Luger working for Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (German Weapons Manufacturer) who wanted to design a universal handgun cartridge that was comfortable to shoot, fit in many hand sizes, and be identical in performance of the service revolvers that were slowly being replaced. It has been internationally recognized as an effective cartridge for military and law enforcement ever since. .40 Smith & Wesson was introduced in 1990 by Winchester and Smith & Wesson to address the issue of the 9mm Luger's stopping power performance, which was perceived as deficient by some American law enforcement agencies. Designed exclusively for law enforcement, it has become very popular with federal, state, and local law enforcement around the United States, and is seen as a good compromise between stopping power, and firepower.
