In this video we’ll be looking at a very long spear head from the Han dynasty (202 BC–220 AD) with three different tests to see how well it can puncture, pierce and how precise it can be. This spear head would’ve been mounted on a 2 meter long pole and carried by Cavalry on the battlefield. We also have the privilege of using a composite spear shaft made of a hardwood core that is then covered by split bamboo, wrapped in cord and covered in a type of cement that is lacquered. I was very surprised at how accurate this spear was in every test, especially with the weight of the pole driving behind it (except for the plunge test in which the pole was too long to fit upright indoors). Spear Test Information and Criteria: Puncture Test: The Spear is dropped from 20cm above the target to see how it will puncture using only gravity and the weight of the spear. *Even changing the pole was not enough to fit in the room and the spear had to be dropped from a lower height* Pierce Test: The Spear is thrust into the freestanding (unsupported) target to measure the amount of penetration from a human powered thrust. Precision Test: The spear is thrust with a fundamental technique in efforts to strike a bamboo skewer.
