She is a first-generation immigrant from war-torn Bosnia. Her family lost everything in the war and immigrated with two suitcases and $50 when she was 15. She lived in government housing and shelters, and had two part-time jobs while in high school. For almost twenty years she also had a career as a CFO, auditor, tax accountant, etc. When they first got married, Maya and her husband started their lives together in $60,000 of debt (student loans, car loans, etc.), which they paid off including their mortgage within 8 years.
