DARPA Subterranean Challenge Tunnel Circuit Event Preview

Eleven Systems teams from around the world will attempt to remotely map, identify, and report the greatest number of artifacts along the passages of a Pittsburgh research mine in the Subterranean Challenge Tunnel Circuit August 15-22, 2019. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Mining Program manages the formerly operational mine that will serve as the arena for the Systems event. Nine Virtual teams will attempt to navigate and identify artifacts in dark, dangerous, and unpredictable underground scenarios in the Virtual Tunnel environment. The Subterranean Challenge seeks to better equip warfighters and first responders to explore human-made tunnel systems, urban underground, and natural cave networks, while decreasing risk to human lives. The Tunnel Circuit, the first of three scored Circuit events, is open only to qualified teams. DARPA will issue regular public updates throughout the event.
