This took place in the Lamanai Archaeological site in Orange Walk Belize in April 2012. I saw this huge (more than 2-inch body length) Pompilid wasp searching around in an area of short grass. When I went to take some pictures of it I found that it had disappeared down a large tarantula burrow. As I waited for it to emerge, a large male tarantula came out of another burrow nearby (an escape tunnel apparently) and started trying to find a place to hide. Within a few seconds the wasp reemerged and began flying around in search of the tarantula. Because I had been looking for birds I had a 2x teleconverter on a 180mm lens, so unfortunately the autofocus was disabled. I should have removed the teleconverter but I didn't have much time once the wasp started hunting for the spider. Still not a bad video of an almost unbelievable battle that I previously only had Jean-Henri Fabre's words to say that this really happened. PS: the spoiler above may not necessarily be the whole truth; the spider definitely lost, but the wasp may have been bitten also (see Spidey's last-ditch effort at about 2:32). She spent at least 25 minutes moving around and cleaning her antennae on a nearby palm leaf after the fight. As the sun was beginning to set I wasn't able to see what finally happened and whether she was going to try to move that massive spider.
