In 2020, Kentridge reestablished photogravure in his printmaking, collaborating with institutions such as Jillian Ross Print in Canada, the University of Alberta with Steven Dixon, and the David Krut Workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa. Procession I is printed from a single copper plate on Gampi White paper, adhered to Hahnemühle Natural paper using Methyl Cellulose. The matrix was created through direct gravure, with Kentridge drawing on frosted acetate at UC Berkeley in 2023. The image was then transferred to copper using photogravure by Steven Dixon at the University of Alberta. During proofing at DKW in Johannesburg, Kentridge added drypoint. The title Procession refers to seven sculpture figures made around the same time. Procession II is one of two prints from the same copper plate. The matrix for Procession I was created using direct gravure. For Procession II, a second copper plate with step-bite aquatint was added to create a mountainous backdrop and enhance the tone of the grass . Kentridge also incorporated drypoint and hand-wash details, printing both plates in two runs on Gampi White paper, later mounted on handpainted Hahnemühle Natural paper. Procession I and Procession II connect multiple works within Kentridge’s broader thematic projects , including The Great Yes, The Great No , Oh To Believe In Another World , and the Chiesa di San Francesco Saverio, Palermo Cash Book Drawings (V-VIII) series.
