Tiger Hill in Darjeeling is a budding offbeat destination with the best sunrise and a panoramic view of Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world and the highest mountain in India. Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary is close by. There are just a handful of homestays in Jorebungalow, of which Tiger Hill Homestay is the best and relatively new. Tashi Dolma, a school teacher who specializes in civics and a super host, owns and runs this homestay, assisted by her mother-in-law and Bindiya Ji. I traveled along with Mammam (my mom), Srikanth, and Shubhojeet. We spent an amazing time with Tashi Ji and her family during our stay. Tashi Ji’s youngest Ngawang made sure that we never felt bored as we played chess and read books together. Tashi Ji also has a Tibetan Mastiff, Chipra, a very playful and energetic one whom we took on walks along the Senchal Forest Road. Together, we all visited the Tiger Hill Sunrise Point and spent some time enjoying the view of Mt. Kanchenjunga along with some winter shopping. The food at the homestay was amazing and Tashi ji was kind enough to let me use her kitchen as I cooked food for all of us once. Dadi Ji is a 70- year-old lady, but she is more fit than any of us were. North Bengal Dooars -    • Exploring Dooars   Tiger Hill Homestay has an amazing view of Mt. Kanchenjunga from its terrace and balconies as well. On a clear day, you won’t be able to believe your eyes when looking at Kanchenjunga from the terrace. We also went on walks in the evening, sometimes towards the market area to help Tashi ji with some groceries and sometimes into the Senchal Forest. Anil Ji, Tashi Ji’s neighbour, also took us on a drive in the evening to experience the forest area and its eeriness. We have bonded with the host and her family so much that we didn’t feel like leaving. We promised to return as soon as possible.
