It blooms on high leafless branches. The Bastard Teak is a medium-sized deciduous tree. It belongs to the Fabaceae family. However, the Bastard Teak tree is mostly popular for its flower. It is referred to as Kinshuk in Sanskrit. Bastard Teak has the unique feature of sprouting buds as the leaves fall in Falgun. The flower has five petals, one of which is long and extends forward. The flowers have curved petals that resemble a bird's beak. The petals are dark orange or golden yellow in color. The fruit is flat and has trichomes on the peel like a bean. Bastard Teak also has medicinal benefits besides beauty. It is used as the cure for various diseases including diarrhea and fever. Also, Holi colors are made using the yellow color extracted from flowers. Apart from this, Bastard Teak is an important host for the lac bug. The gum extracted from its bark is known as Bengal Kino. The Bastard Teak seed powder is used to control harmful insects. Ropes are made using coarse fibers of the bark. The wood of Bastard Teak is resistant to decay. Therefore, it is used to build boats or similar structures. Its charcoal is of high quality. This Bastard Teak, known as the Flame of the Forest, is becoming less visible. Due to the unawareness of Bastard Teak’s importance and prevalence of foreign trees, our native trees are alarmingly declining. Therefore, more attention is required for the indigenous plants. So, we need to be more careful of our native plants. Only then will the Bastard Teak and other beneficial trees sustain in nature.
