In this video, I check whether or not existing pipework will support an air source heat pump (ASHP). I've started on the road to replacing my gas boiler with an air source heat pump, which I'm hoping with be a combination of DIY and professional (adding new electrical circuit needs an electrician and removing my gas boiler is the sole realm of a Gas Safe engineer) In this video, I try to explain some of the key differences between ASHPs and Gas Boilers and how those differences impact your existing heating system like pipes and radiators. Once I've covered the basis, I then focus on the existing pipework in my house and take a look at whether it's suitable. One of the biggest challenges in retro fitting a heat pump seems to be the need to replace existing pipework, which can involve lifting floors and replacing large sections of pipe. After drawing out the layout of my radiators, I looked at each section of pipework to ensure it can carry the necessary amount of heat at the right speed for a heat pump. Whilst it looks like some sections need to be upgraded, these are in the garage, so easily accessible. The rest of the pipework in the house seems okay. I still need to check the pressure drop across the system, so I still might need to make changes. I'm hoping to DIY the installation, so I’ll be taking my time with analysis. I'm no expert on this subject, but I'm doing my best to learn as much as I can. I will have a professional check everything, but as this is a subject of interest, I don’t mind doing some of the legwork too.
