Pygora goat fiber has guard hairs. You can send your Pygora fiber to a mill that has a machine that removes guard hairs, or you can remove the guard hairs yourself using fine tooth fiber combs. A fellow fiber artist-hand spinner; Shayne Bjorndahl shared her experience with processing Denari Wren’s fiber. Wren grazes on pastures full of undergrowth and her barn is lined with clean straw. The fiber was harvested in the fall of 2021 after Wren had spent the majority of her time enjoying the grass filled areas where she spent her days. As I skirted the fiber before delivering it to Shayne, the fiber had little or no chaff or vegetable matter(vm). Shayne used a drop of Dawn dish detergent in her first wash. Using a fine linen washing bag she simply emerged the fiber into the sink of warm water. Her second bath was plain water and her third bath was water with just a touch of vinegar in it to balance the Ph. After laying the fiber out to dry she started running it through her combs. She knew what to look for in finding the guard hairs as they would stay behind. Those were set aside as she took the fiber through the combs 3 times. The end result was a beautiful rope like stand of fiber that is ready for hand spinning. Thank you Shayne for sharing these photos!
