While still a drummer for the school's cadets team the young Sipho was recruited by Selby Ntuli to join the band The Beaters. Upon Ntuli's death in 1978, he took over leadership of the band - which by then had renamed itself to Harari. After the demise of Harari, Sipho embarked on a solo career. A gifted, competent multi-instrumentalist in his own right (he plays drums, flute, piano, saxophone, kalimba, alto flute, timbales and African drums), his biggest commercial hit remains 1985's "Burn Out". His album "Chant of the Marching" was banned in 1992, and he remains an active mentor for other young artists.
