Acts Chapter 15 addresses one of the most critical theological turning points in the entire book of Acts: what must a person do to be saved? As the gospel spreads rapidly among the Gentiles, a serious dispute arises in the early church. Some believers insist that Gentile converts must be circumcised and follow the law of Moses in order to be truly saved. This controversy is not minor. It strikes at the very heart of the gospel, grace, faith, and the nature of salvation itself. Paul and Barnabas return from their missionary journey and immediately face opposition over this issue, leading to a formal gathering in Jerusalem often called the Jerusalem Council. The apostles and elders come together to discern God’s will, not through politics or power, but through testimony, Scripture, and the work of the Holy Spirit. Peter reminds the assembly that God already gave the Holy Spirit to the Gentiles just as He did to the Jews, making no distinction between them. He declares that salvation comes through the grace of the Lord Jesus, not through the burden of the law. This moment reinforces a foundational truth of the New Testament: justification is by grace through faith, not by ritual or legal observance. James then connects the Gentile mission to the fulfillment of prophecy, showing that the inclusion of the nations was always part of God’s redemptive plan. Rather than placing the full weight of the Mosaic law on Gentile believers, the council sends a letter encouraging unity, wisdom, and sensitivity within a diverse and growing church. Acts 15 also reveals the human side of ministry as a sharp disagreement arises between Paul and Barnabas over John Mark. Two faithful servants, both committed to the mission, part ways and continue the work in different directions. Luke shows us that even conflict does not stop the advance of the gospel. Instead, the mission multiplies. This chapter teaches that the church must guard the purity of the gospel, listen carefully to the Spirit, and pursue unity without compromising truth. The decision of the Jerusalem Council preserves the message of grace and ensures that the gospel remains accessible to all nations, not confined to cultural or ceremonial barriers. As the chapter closes, the believers are strengthened, encouraged, and sent forward, demonstrating that doctrinal clarity and spiritual unity are essential foundations for a global mission.
