Chromosomal Translocation and Mixed Lineage Leukemia

Mixed lineage leukemia, or MLL, is a type of acute leukemia that occurs mostly in pediatric patients and is associated with a poor prognosis and high relapse rates. Patients with MLL have unique gene expression profiles due to chromosomal translocations that result in MLL fusion proteins. This genetic malfunction causes unchecked proliferation of leukemic blast cells. The Shilatifard laboratory studies the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying leukemogenesis and aims to identify potential targets for cancer therapeutics.
