BS 1363: These plugs, which are for domestic UK use, are made of a material that is known to shatter if dropped or receive a hard knock. Because of this, plugs made of this material should not be used in environments where that risk is more likely to take place ( i.e. the garden, or work shops ) The solution to this, ( without changing-over to another Standard ) is Resilient plugs, otherwise known as 'rubber' plugs, or Tough Plugs. Two types of plug exist for this reason....There's the Tough Plug by MK (other brands are available!) and then there's the rubberised plugs, made by Duraplug, and are usually referred to as 'Duraplugs', even if it wasn't made by Duraplug! Once again, other brands are available. :-D Whilst discussing the BS 1363 standard, I quickly show some adaptors ( sometimes known as power cubes ) and how, by design, it is difficult to 'piggyback' these without obstructing a lot of the outlets by other plugs' flexes. We also get to take a quick look at moulded-on plugs, which cannot be opened-up, or rewired. Because these are made to BS 1363, they MUST be fused ( to BS 1362 ) and thus incorporate a replaceable fuse. BS 546: Once again, these plugs were made in that material which, if dropped, resulted in the plug shattering everywhere. The solution? Rubberised Duraplugs! Yes, the Duraplug was also made in the 15A BS 546 configuration also! Even extension-cord sockets were made in the rubberised form also, once again 15A, to BS 546. These 15A rubberised plugs and sockets are still rather popular in Stage Lighting applications. BS EN 60309-2: Here's a new one for you, peoples! These plugs, formerly known as BS 4343, are the more industrial, outside-use, non-domestic plug. The blue 240v plugs ( rated at 16A or 32A.....or even 63A! ) are well known to caravanners (and even boat / yacht / houseboat owners) as these are now what's usually found at caravan pitches, boating marinas, or moorings, to connect up your caravan / boat / yacht / houseboat. Due to the 'BS EN' designation within the plug's standard, these are (supposed to be....) recognised across Europe. An equivalent of the domestic 'power cube' are available for these BS EN 60309-2 plugs, and I show one of them in the video! The BS EN 60309-2 plugs are sometimes known as 'Commando' plugs, and commando is a trade-mark of MK Electric. Other brands are available of course, like Lewden-Palazzoli, for example. -BoomBoxDeluxe.
