Yes, he was killed by one of his own people. ;( Enjoy the video! Especially for the Irish! Time taken: nine days. "Michael Collins (Irish: Mícheál Ó Coileáin; 16 October 1890 – 22 August 1922) was an Irish revolutionary, soldier, and politician who was a leading figure in the early-20th-century Irish struggle for independence. He was Chairman of the Provisional Government of the Irish Free State from January 1922 until his death in August 1922." From Wikipedia August 22, 1922 - "A Cork-man, Michael Collins, was on a travel to his native county on Cork with his men, while the Civil War, between the Anti-Treaty Republic and the Free State Pro-Treaty, that recently raged on Ireland, seemed to be winding down. Unfortunately, in the road of Beal na mBlath (mouth of the flowers/blossom), County Cork, they were caught in an ambush and Collins was shot dead. Five hundred thousand people, including many British soldiers who had fought against him during the War of Independence, attended his funeral in Dublin's Pro Cathedral. His death and Arthur Griffith's (died: August 12, 1922) wasn't the last for the war yet, as the Irish Free Staters grew bitter towards the Republicans. It will all be over in 1923 when the new IRA chief of staff, Frank Aiken (April 10, 1923: Liam Lynch was shot at Knockmealdown Mountains and died on a hospital), ordered the IRA men to lay down their weapons." Collins and the others like Arthur Griffith signed the treaty because they want to avoid another war with the British and it would be a stepping-stone to full independence and the republic, which eventually happened almost thirty years later! "It is my considered opinion that in the fullness of time history will record the greatness of Michael Collins; and it will be recorded at my expense." —Eamon De Valera 1966. Thanks for watching!
