The nation lost perhaps the most decorated veteran alive when Bob Howard died. He began his Army career as an enlisted man, entered the Army at the age of 17, following in the footsteps of his father and four uncles—all of whom were paratroopers in World War II. He joined the 101st Airborne and served in the Special Forces Group in Vietnam. His Service in uniform is legendary. He served five tours in Vietnam and was wounded 14 times in those 54 months. In one 13-month tour, he was nominated for the Medal of Honor three times, for three separate actions—more than anyone else in history. He was the recipient of eight Purple Hearts, two Distinguished Service Crosses, four Bronze Stars, numerous Silver Stars, and yes, the Medal of Honor.
