From the wonderful compilation album "Ponies at Dawn - Ignite", available now on bandcamp: https://poniesatdawn.bandcamp.com/alb... Fanfiction is a fairly unique medium, and it's one I'm very fond of. I've spent hundreds of hours listening to text-to-speech readouts of fanfics while I drive. While many are extremely high-quality, right up there with published fiction, the ones written by more inexperienced middle- and high-school authors have a certain charm that is hard to explain but easy to appreciate. There's something about a good "high school AU fic" that really puts me back in the adolescent mindset. Entire writing teams for decades have tried to truly capture the tween/teen style, and hardly any succeed, but an inexperienced 14-year-old writing their first Sonic fanfic captures it effortlessly. This song is a tribute to that accomplishment and to the time and mindset it represents. Lyrics: Ink on a page Sparks in a brain That’s all it is Dots on a screen Sound from machines That’s all it is The charm and the youth The unspoken truth It can’t be mimicked The life that it breathes The volumes it speaks The respite it brings Removes me from this Earth Love and loss are its muse Rest and joy are its use Snapshots of years Of crushes and tears Have long since hollowed A half-written scene From time in between That grayscale followed A chapter of youth More brash and uncouth But no less fondly remembered Preserved on a page The friendships and rage That time and that age That remove me from this Earth Love and loss are its muse Rest and joy are its use Read like a dream New imagery Naive and green It removes me from this Earth Love and loss are its muse Rest and joy are its use
