NOTE FROM TED: This talk only represents the speaker's personal views and understanding of the brain, behavior, and threat detection. EMDR remains an ongoing field of study. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t... What do you not want people to know about you? John Gardner is a former professional skateboarder, aspiring clinical therapist, and social worker on a mission to help end the stigma of men’s mental health. In his talk, John speaks on a new perspective on how to approach men’s mental health by meeting them where they are. Rather than a room and a couch, John invites us all to reimagine therapy in a shoulder to shoulder environment. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Professional Skateboarder and Social Worker, John Gardner, has built his career and company on the message of resilience and self-inquiry. For more than a decade, John traveled the globe skateboarding before retiring to study men’s mental health and suicide prevention as a Social Worker. Devastated by multiples suicides of friends, in 2021 John teamed up with DC Shoes to create the award winning mini documentary on mental health, “This Too Shall Pass” featuring fellow skateboarder and Neuroscientist, Andrew Huberman. The overwhelming response to the film validated John's desire to further spread the message of stress reduction and suicide prevention on a grand scale. John resides in Asheville, NC where is currently enrolled at Western Carolina University pursuing his Masters in Social Work. He still travels globally teaching through his company, Nothing But Today. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
