Best AGARTALA Street FOOD Tour I Chicken Bharta with Bangui + Haleem & Fresh Egg Cake + Bhapa Pitha

We went for a food tour in Agartala to with our fellow food friend Sivangi who is teacher by profession.  In the heart of Agartala lies Swapna Fast Food Center, an old eatery cherished by locals. It is here that we first encountered two quintessential street food delights: Bangui and Pork/Chicken Bhorta. As we entered this unassuming establishment, the unfamiliar yet tantalizing aroma of their signature dishes immediately sparked our curiosity. Bhorta, typically known as a mashed dish from Bengal, took on a unique and refreshing form here. It was presented as a healthy salad-like dish made by combining tender chunks of boiled pork or chicken with a vibrant mix of coriander leaves, roasted chilies, ginger, onions, and just a dash of salt. It could be paired with either roti or bangui, the latter being a local specialty. Bangui, a traditional sticky rice dish unique to Tripura, stood out as something truly special. Made with fragrant native rice, ginger, and finely chopped carrots, it is steamed inside lairu leaf cones. The subtle earthiness of the lairu leaves, combined with the warm aroma of ginger and the sweetness of the rice, made it a perfect pairing with the zesty chicken bhorta that was served alongside. As we took a bite of the pork bhorta wrapped in the thin, soft roti, the flavors harmonized beautifully. The pork was tender and seasoned just right, with the roasted chilies and ginger adding an enjoyable level of heat. Despite its simplicity, the dish was packed with flavor, showcasing the beauty of minimalism in street food. We then explored more of Agartala’s street food offerings, stopping at various iconic eateries, each known for its own specialty. At Haaji, we sampled bamboo chicken, a flavorful dish where chicken is cooked inside bamboo over a fire, infusing the meat with a delicate, earthy taste. Our sweet cravings took us to Bholagiri Mithai Shop, where we indulged in kheertua, a luscious dessert made of cottage cheese soaked in rich condensed milk, and nolen gurer rosogolla, a winter-special Bengali sweet known for its deep, caramel-like flavor. The day continued with a stop at Ranjit Pitha Cart, where we tried some home-style bhapa pitha, soft steamed rice cakes, along with the rich and crispy malpua and the delicately sweet patishapta, a stuffed rice flour crepe. At Laxmi Bakery, we savored chicken chop, a deep-fried pastry stuffed with a spicy chicken filling, before heading to Giridhari Mistanna Bhandar for fried sondesh, a decadent treat of lightly fried cottage cheese balls coated in khoya. Next at The Chicken Corner introduced us to prawn fry, crunchy and golden from its breadcrumb coating, and the distinctively flavored gondhoraj chicken pakora, prepared with the zest of the aromatic gondhoraj lime. Our penultimate stop was Food Hut. It is a small non veg stall run by a couple. Here we had a tasty duck curry.  The final stop was Rahul Fast Food, where we enjoyed their famous haleem, a flavorful, slow-cooked meat and lentil stew with egg cake. Both the dishes were just amazing. Watch till the end for all drooling details.
