Crunchy leaves, sunny weather, and gelato! Come along for a chatty fall ride from the MA border into Putnam, CT on the Airline Trail and Putnam River Trail. We started at the Airline Trail parking lot in Thompson, CT where in 1891 there was an infamous Four Train Wreck with two freight trains and two passenger trains. Three perished in the accident. There are also the remnants of the train turntable. The train wreck sign and parking lot is here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/mtc8dPbCiLvnf.... Usually I rely on Google to research treat places, but it failed me this time. We tried Riverside Ice Cream in Putnam, but it was already closed for the season. Fortunately, we found Main St Gelato on our way back into Thompson. It was 80 degrees, so we very much welcomed the cold treats! On the way back, we connected with the southernmost part of the Southern New England Trunkline Trail (SNETT) and rode into Douglas, MA. This is an unpaved, pretty ride that passes through Douglas State Forest. You can hike 0.3 miles to the Tri-state border marker from this part of the trail. If you want to see the easternmost section of the SNETT, check out our video here: • Southern New England Trunkline Trail in Fr...
