From 1971-1972, Disney guests had the chance to fly directly into a small airport located just south of the Contemporary Resort, owned and operated by Disney World. This was in an age that the U.S. Department of Transportation and Florida DOT thought that a brand new technology was coming, one that would change the way people traveled. STOL flights, aka "Short Take Off and Landing". Disney World was the first STOLport to be built, with plans to built 7 others in Florida and create a network of shuttle flights. And they expected in the first year alone, 1.7 million people would use the Disney STOLport. But after just two years of operation, the STOLport closed permanently and was left abandoned. What happened? This is the story of the Lake Buena Vista STOLport.
