Reaching the hardest to reach means speaking their language. Literally. In humanitarian and development settings, programs may fail to connect with marginalized communities because of language barriers, mistranslations, or culturally insensitive terms. These gaps can lead to confusion, exclusion and reduced impact, outcomes that may be exacerbated in the context of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Co-hosted by CanWaCH and IAWG on June 4, and led by IAWG member CLEAR Global, this webinar explored the role of language in programme design. It considered the connections between language, vulnerability and exclusion, with a particular focus on affordable and impactful solutions for sexual and reproductive health programming. CLEAR Global partners with women’s rights and health organizations to make sexual and reproductive health information accessible in the languages and formats women understand. With their innovative communication solutions, women can access educational resources, health-care services and support. They can also share their concerns and receive answers safely and securely. Drawing on over 10 years of research, CLEAR Global shared practical solutions for designing language-inclusive global health programs. Areas covered during the webinar include: The role of language in program design, especially in SRHR programming. Common struggles in understanding guidance faced by partner organizations. Why terms matter? Cultural nuances and taboos in discussing health topics. The digital health programming divide: What are the major challenges, and what steps can help solve them. Language inclusive program design – with a focus on affordable solutions.
