Allegro con brio II. Adagio III. Allegretto grazioso IV. Allegro, ma non troppo James Mooy–Director of the SBCC Symphony Orchestra James Mooy currently conducts the 70-piece Symphony Orchestra at Santa Barbara City College. He is a Music Academy of the West alumnus and has toured the US and Japan as a professional trumpet player. He currently serves on the Santa Barbara Symphony’s Board of Directors. For nearly 20 years he directed the award-winning Lunch Break Jazz Ensemble and taught the Electronic Music/Sound Recording classes at SBCC. In 2017, he conducted the Honor Jazz Ensemble of the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association at the NAMM show and SCSBOA convention in Anaheim. He also served as a clinician for the 2017 Reno Jazz Festival and continues to conduct honor orchestras and concert bands state-wide. In August of 2020, when the pandemic made in-person gatherings impossible, he and his colleague James Watson, pioneered a way to hold rehearsals and performances of SBCC’s 20-member jazz ensembles live online–a feat accomplished by no other academic or professional group in America. Along with other members of this orchestra, he donates his talents by contracting and participating in the orchestra for the Messiah Sing-Along, a charitable holiday event with a tradition of over four decades in Santa Barbara. ****** On October 18 and 19 of 2025, the brass section of the SBCC Symphony was featured in the first selection of the Santa Barbara Symphony’s season opening concert in the historic Granada Theater. Performing with the legendary musicians of the Santa Barbara Symphony was beyond thrilling. A special thanks to Maestro Nir Kabaretti for graciously hosting us and to the incredible musicians of the Santa Barbara Symphony. ****** The musicians of the SBCC Symphony would like to thank Maestro Nir Kabaretti for taking his time to rehearse us in the first movement of Dvořák’s Symphony No.8. We were on the edge of our seats as he gently guided us to new levels of musicianship. Thank you, Maestro Kabaretti! Your dedication to music education in our community is second to none. ****** What makes the SBCC Symphony, Concert Band, Chorus, Jazz and Chamber Ensembles unique? Our orchestra, band, jazz, vocal and chamber ensembles are very special--a jewel in Santa Barbara’s crown. These groups mirror our community’s diversity, appreciation of the arts, and ability to unite to create something larger than any one of its individual parts. In attending this concert, you are experiencing an overt demonstration of the best in our community, SBCC students learning and receiving mentoring from community members and together realizing some of the most challenging and beautiful art in the history of humankind. This notion of mentoring is what makes City College’s music programs so rewarding: to the performers and to the community alike. ************************************************ Do you want to hear more great music?
