The Longest Roman Water Supply Line, a Review After Thirty Years of Research
James Crow is the current chair of the British Institute at Ankara and Emeritus Professor of Roman and Byzantine Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh. For thirty years he has been researching and writing about the monuments of Turkish Thrace (Trakya), especially the monumental water supply of Constantinople, aptly described by Prof Kâzim Çeçen as ‘The Longest Roman Water Supply Line’ (1996). This lecture will review previous research on the monumental hydraulic infrastructure in Trakya and will consider the contribution of recent BIAA research projects outside and within the historic city of Istanbul to a further understanding of the city’s water supply system.
