The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is one of the most remarkable achievements of the post-World War II era. Some 98% of the world’s nations agreed to either give up their sovereign rights to acquire nuclear weapons - or if they already had them, to gradually get rid of their arsenals. The few holdouts deserve special treatment relative to their unique cases. But now, for the first time, there is simultaneously a two-front attack on the NPT regime which is administered by the IAEA: Russia’s rhetoric as part of its campaign against Ukraine and its supporters in the West, and Iran’s challenge to inspection and verification procedures threaten to undercut the very basis of the NPT.
