Mossberg Maverick, 12 G Pump Gun Part 3 This is part 3 of 3 parts providing some basic suggestions about preparing and using a Mossberg Maverick 12g Shotgun. It’s generally understood that for the uses discussed (basic security) a shotgun is often a good choice, with pump action models offering the benefits of simplicity and economy. Although I researched firearms as an academic, I don’t keep any guns in our home. I helped a colleague become familiar with this economical pump gun often bought for family “defense.” I explained that all the research shows adding a gun makes a home less, not more, safe but she insisted. At first (DOCTOR LEISURE # 82, 12 G PUMP GUN PART 1) I went over the weapon and some history. Next, I described just a few more details of ownership: some long-gun owners like slings, some don’t. Anyway, the next You Tube video (DOCTOR LEISURE #85, 12 G Pump Gun Part 2) involved finishing getting this shotgun ready for my friend including attaching a strap. Rifle and shotgun slings are primarily used to make carrying the firearm more comfortable, safe, and managable, especially over longer distances. This last part, DOCTOR LEISURE #95, 12 G Pump Gun Part 3) takes viewers to the range, provides a few final safety comments, and illustrates the impact of a shotgun’s discharge. I’ve been focusing on providing a bridge for the uninformed into the complexity of handling such weapons without unwanted bad outcomes. If you enjoyed these videos the gunning sports offer an enormous opportunity to those who participate, and You Tube provides a vast array of firearms specialists whose You Tube videos display significantly more expertise in both the devices and the sport than offered by my introduction. I recommend moving on to those wonderfully helpful vids. At the range, the Maverick 12 gauge shotgun is carried in a suitable case which prevents normal bangs and jars of transport. Though of course large, shot gun shells, composed of a primer (which when crushed by the impact of the appropriately named “firing pin” in the gun) sparks into a portion of explosive powder. The very rapidly expanding gas thus produced forces whatever projectiles (and these may vary) down the barrel of the shotgun until exiting the muzzle or end. Shells may be filled with small pellets, called birdshot because of their use in hunting, buck shot – again because of their use hunting buck deer. Slugs, also hunting but solid, not pelletized, describes the shape of the projectile. Note that the “safety,” a device designed to prevent the gun from firing, should always be engaged unless own intends to shoot. By convention, “ready” is marked with red, safe is black: think “red? It can make them dead.” While tissue is much tougher than a thin water filled plastic jug, please look at that force of impact. Though tougher, tissue is living. Be cautious and prudent when handing firearms. As the safety manual says, “It is important to prioritize safety and responsible firearm ownership. Following manufacturer guidelines and seeking professional advice can help ensure [owners] are comfortable and proficient with [the] pump-action shotgun for its intended purpose.” Remember is no such thing as an unloaded gun.
