How to Grow a Banyan Bonsai from a Stem Cutting What You Will Need A healthy parent banyan tree A sharp, clean knife or secateurs A small pot (4-6 inches) with good drainage holes A Well-Draining Potting Mix: A mix of 50% garden soil (মাটি) and 50% coarse sand (বালি) is perfect. Rooting Hormone Powder: (Optional, but highly recommended for this difficult season). A Large, Clear Plastic Bag: This is the most important item for success in winter. The Step-by-Step Method Step 1: Select the Perfect Cutting Look for a "semi-hardwood" cutting. This is a stem from this year's growth that is firm and has started to turn from green to light brown. Cut a piece that is 6-8 inches long and about the thickness of a pencil. Step 2: Prepare the Cutting Make a clean, 45-degree angled cut at the bottom of the stem. Carefully remove all the leaves from the cutting, leaving only the top 2 or 3 leaves. Pro-Tip: Take your scissors and cut these remaining top leaves in half. This reduces water loss and helps the cutting focus its energy on making roots. Step 3: Apply Rooting Hormone This step gives your cutting a powerful boost, especially in this non-ideal season. Dip the bottom 1-2 inches of the cutting into the rooting hormone powder. Step 4: Plant the Cutting Fill your pot with the prepared moist soil and sand mix. Use a stick to poke a hole in the center. (This prevents the rooting hormone from rubbing off). Insert the cutting about 2-3 inches deep and gently firm the mix around it. Step 5: Create the 'Mini-Greenhouse' (The 100% Essential Step) Water the pot gently. Cover the entire pot and cutting with the clear plastic bag. Use a rubber band to seal the bag around the pot. This bag will trap humidity and keep the cutting from drying out in the cool, dry air.
