Is pushing or pulling a lawn mower easier? Begin the problem by analysing the forces acting on the lawn mower, in this example we found the horizontal and vertical components of the applied forces and observed that the horizontal force is the same in both cases but the apparent weight is not. In the case of pushing the lawn mower, the applied force adds to the weight of the lawn mower which means there is a larger normal reaction. However when pulling the lawn mower the vertical component of the applied force subtracts from the weight of the lawn mower making the apparent weight lighter than if we had pushed the lawn mower. Because the force of friction is directly proportional to the apparent weight (normal reaction), we conclude that the friction is less in the case of pulling.
