Why Chinese Bosses Treat Workers Like Slaves | The Dark Truth Behind China’s Workaholic Culture

Hello everyone, today let’s talk about why so many Chinese bosses prefer to force their employees to work unpaid overtime instead of encouraging them to complete their work efficiently. The overtime culture in China has caused many of my friends working there to suffer from depression, so I really want to dive into this issue. Most people believe that many Chinese bosses don’t really qualify as entrepreneurs, or even capitalists. At their core, they still think like feudal slave owners. A true capitalist only cares about how much profit you generate. If you’re highly capable and bring in money, showing up late or leaving early isn’t an issue—sometimes they don’t even care if you’re hardly in the office, as long as you deliver results. But a feudal-minded boss thinks differently: once they’ve “bought” a chunk of your time, then all of your time belongs to them. They expect you to be on call, day or night. If you finish your tasks quickly and seem to have free time, they don’t see it as efficiency—they see it as them giving you too little work. Letting you leave on time feels, to them, like losing money. They think overtime equals value. If you work late, they might say you’re inefficient and push you to find ways to improve productivity. If you work late, they might also feel satisfied—but then look down on those who leave on time, accusing them of being less dedicated, less hardworking, and not putting in enough effort. On the other hand, if you improve your efficiency and finish on time, they’ll say your workload is “not full” and use that as an excuse to cut your performance rating or even lower your agreed salary. Your coworkers may also pressure you into working overtime, because that’s the only way the boss feels content. In recent years, with the U.S.-China trade war squeezing profits, many Chinese companies have been struggling or even shutting down. As profits decline, bosses have become even more ruthless in squeezing their employees. What used to be the workload of three people is now dumped on one person, who is then forced to work late into the night. These days, many Chinese workers are putting in 14-hour days, sometimes even working weekends, without any extra pay for the overtime. As a result, many of my Chinese friends are under immense pressure. Those who manage to hang on often end up with physical or mental health problems. Those who can’t handle it simply quit. In China, it’s often only foreign companies that treat employees as real people. Local Chinese bosses, by contrast, tend to treat their workers like draft animals, exploiting them to the extreme. #ChinaWorkCulture #overtime #UnpaidOvertime #ChineseBosses #WorkPressure #EmployeeExploitation #WorkLifeBalance #LaborRights #ChinaJobs #WorkStress #Depression #CorporateCulture #ChinaEconomy #MentalHealth #996ICU #996WorkCulture #OverworkChina #China996 #ToxicWorkCulture #Overworked
