CONJUNCTIVITIS The thin transparent membrane that covers the white part of eye & inner surface of eyelids called conjuctiva got infected called CONJUNCTIVITIS • Virus named Adenovirus causing this conjunctivitis infection •Conjunctivitis or Pink eye caused by viral Or bacterial infection • There are many other reasons for eye infection so confirm from the doctor first wheather it is conjunctivitis or not. • If this infection left untreated severe cases of bacterial infection conjunctivitis can lead to complications such as corneal ulcers (Blurry Vision all through life) Symptoms • Redness, itchiness and discharge in eye . • Difficulty to open eye in the morning due to formation of crust over it. •Eyes may get swollen and person may experience sensitivity to light. •However , it doesn't affect your vision after the disease has been treated and completely cured. Prevention Strategies • Wearing contact lenses that are not clean or not your own can cause bacterial conjunctivitis. • If You wear contact lenses, switch to glasses until the infection clear up. • Avoid using handkerchief to touch eyes in infection. It's better to use tissue [use it for once ] this spreads more infection. • Do not touch your eyes if your hand are not sanitized or washed. • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water at least 20 sec. • Avoid sharing personal item likes towel, pillow, eye makeup like contact lenses. • Refrain from touching or rubbing your eyes to prevent virus entering your eyes. • Wear mask to protect against airborne transmission, especially in crowded places. •Seek medical advice if you suspect you have eye flu. • If your child get conjunctivitis. It is best to keep them at home until they are no longer contagious. This prevent infection from spreading to others & treat under doctor consultation. • Adults should also take leave atleast for 3,4 days . If they get infected What makes it contagious? Conjunctivitis spreads rapidly and can survive on surface like doorknobs, towels, tissues for long. It spreads by direct contact by touching contaminated surface then your eyes. So , it is advised not to share personals. It also spread fast in spaces which aren't well ventilated. Initial Symptoms of Eye flu?? • Redness, itching & gritty sensation in eyes. • As the infection progresses patient may experience light sensitivity and eye discharge. • The most concerning signs of eye flu include .Severe pain .Drop in vision .Increased in redness spreading around cornea Myths However it is not entirely true. The main mode of transmission of eye flu is through direct contact with the discharge from an infected person's eye. • Simply looking into someone's eye is not significant means of transmission. The virus can spread when you touch your eyes after coming into contact with the infected person's eye secretions. Is it Airborne? Recent research has shown that eye flu can be transmitted through airborne particles. When an infected person cough's Or sneezes, respiratory droplets containing the virus may come into contact with another person's eye. This leads infection. Although direct airborne transmission is not primary mode of spread. It highlights the importance of wearing mask and practicing respiratory hygiene to reduce the risk of transmission through the air. Treatment • Before consulting doctor you may use clean towel or cotton peace. Dip it in cold water and give compress over your closed eyes • However it is important to consult ophthalmologist as over the counter medicines can more harm than good.. • Do not use steroid eye drops on your own unless prescribed by the physician. •Vasocontrictor eye drops are under OTC Medication design to reduce redness in the eyes caused by dilation of blood vessels on eye surface. Some Physicians may prescribe steroids in some eye infections. Steroids eye drop reduces inflammation and provide relief in certain eye conditions..
