The moment it was passed, panic set in. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board is crying foul, calling it injustice. Leaders like Owaisi and Amanatullah Khan are threatening to move the Supreme Court, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge is worried it might lead to Waqf land being handed over to corporates like Ambani and Adani.But perhaps the most curious statement came from Rahul Gandhi—he warned that after Waqf, the BJP might target Catholic Church land. This raised eyebrows. Is this fear genuine—or is there something hidden behind this statement?Upon digging deeper, some startling facts emerge. As per media reports, the Catholic Church in India reportedly holds over 7 crore hectares (17 crore acres) of land—more than even the Waqf Board. This includes thousands of schools, hospitals, colleges, and other institutions spread across the country. The governing body, CBCI (Catholic Bishops' Conference of India), reports directly to Pope Francis in the Vatican.A significant portion of this land was reportedly granted at throwaway prices during British rule. Now questions are being raised: who owns this land legally? How much income does the Church generate? Who audits it? If Waqf properties are being scrutinized, why not Church land?The passage of this bill indicates that BJP—even with reduced seats (240 in 2024)—is still capable of taking bold decisions. Just like Article 370, Triple Talaq, and the Ram Mandir verdicts, this Waqf amendment has once again rattled the so-called “secular” camp. And many fear this is only the beginning—Uniform Civil Code (UCC) could be next.Even the Karnataka High Court recently emphasized the need for UCC, highlighting gender inequality in personal laws.
