The Noir Fantasia cycle explores the night not as a setting, but as a state of mind. Unlike structured nocturnes or studies in form, these pieces unfold through intuition, hesitation, and discovery. Each fantasia listens to itself as it develops, allowing ideas to surface, dissolve, and return in altered form. Rather than narrating events, the cycle traces psychological movement—entry, reflection, disturbance, and withdrawal. Silence, ambiguity, and restraint are integral to the music’s language. What matters here is not resolution, but awareness: the sense of being present inside shadow, thought, and suspended time. This is noir without spectacle—private, inward, and quietly alert. Performed and composed by Seneka Abeyratne (snabeyratne@gmail.com) Genre: Classical – Impressionist – Free Jazz – Noir Instrument: Yamaha Digital Piano Noir Fantasia No. 18: Withdrawal Begins The moment presence decides to loosen. Withdrawal Begins marks the first deliberate step back in the Noir Fantasias cycle. The music grows lighter, more fragile, and less insistent. Phrases end early, gestures arrive with reduced commitment, and silence begins to outweigh sound. This is not erosion or disappearance, but chosen withdrawal. Nothing here demands attention or insists on memory. The music sounds as though it has permission to leave, even as it still occasionally acts. Fantasia 18 does not yet approach absence. Awareness remains, but it loosens its grip. What emerges is restraint without gravity — a controlled disengagement that prepares the way for further thinning and eventual disappearance. Noir Fantasias – music thinking in shadow (21 tracks). About the artist: Seneka Abeyratne, a retired Sri Lankan economist, has numerous creative interests, including writing (fiction/drama), photography, digital art, dancing (ballet/contemporary), choreography (classical-contemporary), and seeking beauty in dissonance via solo piano improvisations (noir classical/noir free jazz). He is a widely published author and winner of three prestigious local literary awards, including the Gratiaen Prize. His evocative, digitally altered images have been exhibited in Sri Lanka and France. Whether through word, image, or sound, his art remains an exploration of introspection — an unhurried dialogue between shadow and soul. #NoirFantasia #PianoImprovisation #DigitalPiano #SenekaAbeyratne #ClassicalNoir #NoirMusic #SoloPiano #ImpressionismInSound
