While many of Ukraine's opposition politicians were busy traversing the globe, lobbying foreign capitals to isolate Ukraine following the trial and conviction of Yulia Tymoshenko, the Party of Regions-led Verkhovna Rada took steps to ensure Ukraine was prepared for Euro 2012. Airports were modernized, roads were built, and security was strengthened throughout Ukraine's regions. All the while, opposition figures sought Ukraine's economic and political isolation. Thanks to policies implemented by the Party of Regions, over 300,000 people safely visited Ukraine during Euro 2012. Security planning resulted in no serious crimes occurring during the month-long event and the boost to Ukraine's economy should have a long-term, positive impact for both Ukraine's small and large businesses. Social and economic policies have been the cornerstone of the Party of Regions popularity with Ukraine voters. While many Ukrainian citizens have struggled with communicating in Ukrainian, the Party of Regions introduced a bill giving other languages official status, should over 10 percent of a region's population primarily speak another language. This measure was especially popular with older Ukrainian voters, who no longer have to endure difficulty filling out documents for medical care or government assistance. Pensioners are further grateful for the increase in monthly government payments that was approved by the current government. Social spending initiatives included wage increases for state sector workers, a large constituency that is greatly appreciative of the Party of Regions efforts to raise their standard of living. Those who lost Soviet savings bank accounts have been compensated for their losses also have the Party of Regions to thank for helping recover funds that were long gone. Ukrainians need action, not empty rhetoric. Voters deserve a government that looks out for their best interests, not politicians who wish to gain publicity for themselves. Ukraine needs stability. Ukraine needs economic growth. Ukraine needs the Party of Regions.
