Spring is the best season though as the roots holds more moisture and is more flexible. This making them easier to harvest. In this video I demonstrate how to find, harvest, proces, store and use spruce roots. Early medieval scandinavian skis had bindings made from spruce roots so its safe to assume that the vikings knew about this great source of natural cordage from the forest. I always keep a good few bundles of dried bundled spruce roots. The beauty of it is that even years after harvesting they can be soaked in water for some hours and they regain their strength and flexibility. As they dry up the keep their form and gets hard and firm again. In my earlier video about making the Gokstad Backpack I used some of the clips and showed in a very brief manner the harvest and processing. But i wanted to make a little video to dive more into the matter as I thought this could be of interest to some of my subscribers. Possible uses for spruce roots: Ski binding, edge reenforcemt, handles for baskets, shelter building, rope, sewing wood together in bushcraft builds and the list goes on.
