TRANSCRIPT: BRANCH: Wake Forest Baptist's Spine Center was developed so that we could provide the range of spine care for patients who got back problems. O’GARA: We offer an integrated approach. We offer many subspecialties here at the Spine Center. BRANCH: Diagnostic, interventional, or minimally invasive treatments. Surgical assessment evaluation. Physical therapy. All of these modalities that we use to treat painful conditions of the spine all in one facility that's easy to get in and out of. I think that's better for our patients. KARVELAS: Comprehensive care allows the physicians to treat the patient with a standard care plan. It consists first of conservative care, starting with simple measures to treat your back pain. Simple measures include pain medications, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy. O’GARA: The vast majority of the time when you come here with a basic back ache or neck ache, we won't be signing you up for any invasive care. Most of the time we're going to make sure the diagnosis is correct- we know the reason- there's not a more underlying more serious problem. And then we're going to prescribe basic stretching, basic type therapeutic exercises to help you get better. KARVELAS: However, sometimes patients have pain that is uncontrolled despite these measures. And for these kinds of patients, we go to the next step in treatment. The next step includes injections or further workup with MRIs or EMG or x-rays. And eventually maybe even surgery. O’GARA: One of the reasons I chose treating the spine within orthopaedics is it's an area of active research. It's evolving rapidly and it's exciting to be at an institution- Wake Forest Baptist Health- where we're at the cutting edge of spine treatment. BRANCH: At Wake Forest, we have really had an emphasis on developing new techniques and new technology. I've received actually 40 patents that have acknowledged the contributions that we've made to developing new and minimally invasive techniques for spine surgery. O’GARA: We think it's important for people to come to the Spine Center even who have minor back pain. We do hear patients say: Oh, I don't think I should come to the Spine Center- it's just a minor problem. But back pain does get worse with time. It will sporadically go away. But over time, it tends to get worse. And if your back is hurting there's a reason for that. You should address it.
