When you are new to revolvers, something that can be a head scratching moment is when you are done shooting for the day, but you have your hammer cocked. While the hammer is cocked, the cylinder release button will not activate, and you will not be able to unload the gun. This causes all sorts of problems for people, as now they have loaded gun, with a lighter trigger, and don’t know how to make it safe. Some people in desperation will take their gun to a gun store and ask for help, hopefully with the gun in a case and not in hand. Others will end up taking a shot in what I hope is in a safe direction to get the hammer dropped. This can all have been easily avoided if they just YouTubed the solution and found this video. 🙂 What you need to do is called decocking, and as the name states, it is the process of getting the hammer down safely, without striking the firing pin and igniting a cartridge. I outline the process in this video, and it’s pretty simple to do. As with all things, practice this skill so you develop proficiency and it becomes second nature.
