Bojan Djordjev and Siniša Ilić at the artist symposium on October 8th, 2020 at Weltmuseum Wien, in video conversation with curator Marina Gržinić about their art installation “Topographies of Emancipation and Coercion” (2020, 3 objects/paintings, 240 × 150 cm, with sound). The work Topographies of Emancipation and Coercion is developed through two segments. The first segment is a map of references in printed form in the catalogue. We named this Atlas. The second segment consists of Pictorial maps and performative spoken narratives and is presented in the exhibition. The pictorial maps are realized as three large-scale digital prints, with texts that are available as audio guides. The maps aim to enter into dialogue with the context of the Weltmuseum Wien and its architecture and grandeur. Their position is that of an overview that goes beyond political or geographic units, but connects distant historical and contemporary events and ideas into a speculation on emancipation and its destruction. The content of images deals with topics of historical anti-colonial and anti-imperial events (the communist Anti-Imperialist League exhibition in Paris and Non-Aligned Movement), which are juxtaposed with contemporary conditions of decades of displacement, outsourcing, and offshore practices used as techniques of building and governing a neocolonial world. Emancipatory moments from the past are summoned from oblivion and juxtaposed with the pictures of movement of masses – displacement, migration, labour, exploitation, survival, and rebellion. Together they articulate ideas of resistance that need to be comprehended, tried out, and embodied again by the subjects and objects in chaotic movement of the contemporary world. Bojan Djordjev, a performance maker educated in theatre, and Siniša Ilić, a visual artist, also working in the field of performance art, both born in Belgrade in 1977, have been collaborating on various artistic and research projects for over twenty years.
