Take a frightening walk during extreme blizzard conditions in Buffalo, NY. Suffocating wind and blinding snow with complete total whiteouts that knock the wind out of your lungs! Almost didn't make it! Was just hoping to get to Tim Hortons for a chocolate vanilla cream donut for Christmas Eve! This walk covered a distance of only around 300 feet each way. It felt like miles instead. Having lived in this area my entire life and thru decades of countless snowstorms of every size, I really didn't think this would be as difficult a walk as it turned out to be. Tim Hortons has a reputation of remaining open during snowstorms to serve snowplow drivers and police among others, and considering the storm had just begun, I was sure they would still be open keeping coffee hot. I had planned on getting inside the shop for a brief rest pit. What surprised me most during this walk was not the whiteouts, the high winds nor the cold. It was how the intense snow removed the oxygen from the air much like snow in an avalanche does. It became very difficult to breathe as there was now more snow than air to breathe in. About a third of the way to Tim Hortons was when I realized I was in trouble and may have made a fatal mistake. The giant scarf which was knitted for me as a Christmas gift long ago by my mother was literally unwrapped by the wind and blown off of me. I really did think I could grab some donuts for Christmas Eve and at the same time chronicle some once in a lifetime storm footage.
