PRP - Platelet Rich Plasma - is a therapeutic injection procedure that uses the patient’s own platelets and stem cells to speed recovery and healing. This procedure can be done on any joint including the spine where there has been injury, trauma, chronic pain and inflammation including arthritis. Because the solution is autologous, meaning it comes from the patient, research confirms the significant reduction in allergic reactions, overall pain and inflammation and improved healing response compared to cortisone injections and hyaluronic acid (HA) preparations. PRP has been associated with reduced incidence of necessity for surgery. In the case of ongoing pain and inflammation even after surgery, PRP can help. The procedure involves a blood draw. The patient’s blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the serum. The serum, rich in the patient’s own platelets, a few stem cells, depending on age and health of patient, and other healing cofactors, is then drawn into a syringe to be injected into the area of patient’s concern. Pain at time of injection is minimal however patients may request lidocaine prior to treatment to decrease some of the discomfort. After effects may include tingling, itching, stiffness and mild swelling. These symptoms are known to spontaneously resolve and last no longer than 48 hours. In this video the client is in his 30’s, presenting with knee pain and arthritic changes verified with diagnostic ultrasound. The study discussed refers to a Japanese trial of 3 treatment sessions 1 week apart to patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. The study includes subjects from ages 50-70 Tbe study showed marked improvement in pain reduction and increased biomarkers indicating healing. When a needle is injected into the skin, an alarm is sent throughout the body to indicate urgent ‼️ need to go to the area and begin repairing. Pain is one of our body’s alarm systems. PRP is like laying down additional construction materials that our body’s use to repair damge and rebuild soft tissue. The needling sets off the alarm and directs the focus to the area being treated. Once the components arrive to the site, there is a concentration of what our body uses to repair and rebuild - PRP! The first 5 days of inflammation after an injury are important because we know that that is the period of most active repair. Because cortisone is a steroid, the most powerful anti inflammatory the body produces, it counteracts this important step in recovery. It does help to relieve immediate pain and inflammation however it does little to repair the damage of the injury. In significant contrast, PRP injections decrease pain and inflammation overall and also improve repair of the original assault and rebuild the structure Typically, PRP sessions are performed 4-6 weeks apart in order to allow the body to do what it does anyway, that is, heal. Depending on the issue, patients may have 1 to 12 sessions to achieve resolution.
