The original plan was to travel from Thessaloniki to Kalabaka, rest overnight there, then film the spectacular roads around Meteora the next day before continuing to Ioannina. However, we couldn't find any available accommodation in Kalabaka, so we had to make the entire journey from Thessaloniki to Ioannina in one go. This meant at least eight hours of driving, as we intended to avoid highways completely and take less-traveled mountain roads instead. The first part of the journey, from Thessaloniki to Veria, was driven in darkness, so filming wasn't possible. In Veria, we took a short break, grabbed a coffee, changed the windshield wipers, and set up the cameras. The lighting wasn't ideal for filming, and the weather wasn't cooperating either, as it was very cloudy, but we anticipated a beautiful drive and decided to film anyway. As we gained altitude, snow appeared, accompanied by the sun's rays emerging from behind the mountains. The road to Polimios was genuinely beautiful, and we encountered very few cars. From Polimios to Drepano Kozani, the route was relatively straight and flat, crossing one of Greece's traditional agricultural regions. From Drepano Kozani, we could have chosen the shorter route to Ioannina, but since our goal was to showcase Greece’s most beautiful roads, we turned left toward Servia. The sun stayed hidden behind mountains and clouds the whole time, but the road took us over the bridge crossing Lake Polyfytos, one of the longest bridges in Greece. A few minutes after passing Servia, perfectly synchronized with the emergence of a spectacular mountain landscape, the sun smiled at us again. We chose not to travel on the main road and instead took a narrow mountain route, which didn’t disappoint, offering stunning views. We even left this narrow road for an even narrower path that took us to a mountain peak, revealing breathtaking views. We continued on various types of roads and, many kilometers later, again left the shortest route for another narrow and spectacular road leading us to Fotino, a picturesque mountain village. Even though we'd already spent over four hours on the road, we arrived in Kalabaka energized. After a short break, we set out to film and show you Meteora, the mystical land of Greek Orthodoxy. After Meteora, we continued toward Koridallos on a busier but equally beautiful road compared to what we'd driven previously. Following Koridallos, in our quest for Greece’s most stunning roads, we again left the main road for a mountainous path leading us to Kranea. The sun accompanied us for part of the journey, but the weather worsened significantly, and it rained so heavily that part of our footage was unusable. However, we managed to film in Metsovo after the police kindly allowed us into the overcrowded yet picturesque village. After Metsovo, the weather deteriorated further, and one of the cameras stopped recording. Almost until Ioannina, it was either raining or foggy, but near the end of our journey, the sun decided to offer its final rays, causing even the defective camera to suddenly resume recording. To end our trip on a high note, Mother Nature treated us to a beautiful rainbow right in the center of Ioannina. 🎧 This video features the original soundtrack as recorded during filming.
