most of the Roses you buy at home centers are grafted because that is the easier way for the producer to create mass production. however in most of the cases the Root Stock (a Wild Rose considered to be very resistant to diseases) will push out their own suckers from below the bud union. these suckers have to be removed very fast before they have the chance to absorb the nutrients that are supposed to go above, to your Scion Rose (the beautiful one that you chose to buy). The Root Stock might also send suckers from underground where the roots are. And you have to continuously observe and the remove these, you have to pull them down with the entire socket, not just cutting them An action which can add additional wounds to the already canker-prone bud union. Own Root roses (grown from cuttings or seeds) are in fact more likely to withstand freezing temperatures and to remain healthy, perform better, they even have a longer lifespan, could grow for hundreds of years while Grafted Roses live for 8-10 years at best! Own Root 🌹 plants develop quite fast and will Bloom the same year, actually just 5 month after doing a cutting. In that sense, Grafted Roses are the LAZY way of cheap mass production. With some exceptions like Double Delight that does not do well on it's own roots.
