What’s interesting is that I felt restless and couldn’t sleep Monday night and Tuesday morning and it wasn’t until I received a text message in my first cousins’ group chat later on Tuesday morning while at work that I realized the reason why. Uncle Tommie was a good man, dare I say a great man, a real class act. He epitomized what a good man was: a family man, a tough, but lovable (gentle) man with good discernment/wisdom, a strong work ethic and playful side mane. Some of my fondest childhood memories took place with Uncle Tommie present and playing his part. From my understanding he would fondly and gleefully recall the time when I ambitiously attempted to cut my own hair with his clippers and he had to save my hairline from ruin. LMAO. Needless to say #MotherNature won that war awhile back, but Uncle Tommie tried. GOD knows he did. Lol. What I loved about Uncle Tommie is that he got a good laugh from that situation, but he didn’t put me down for trying and ended up helping me more than chastising/taunting me about the situation which in my mind made him a real standup guy and man of honor from that day forward. Other memories I have include getting to watch the original #LionKing, a timeless classic, for the 1st time with him and his family at his home as well as getting to watch the #OJSimpson parade going down the 405 in LA which interrupted us watching the #NBAFinals between the #NYKnicks and #HoustonRockets on tv, also at his home. I even gained a greater appreciation for #EddieMurphy’s #TheGoldenChild movie while, you guess it, watching it at his home with his family. As you can tell, I always felt at home and welcomed by Uncle Tommie & The Gipsons. I am glad I had a chance to see Uncle Tommie twice in 2023, the first at his home filled with love in #Saginaw and the last at #TheSharperBall in the #ATL where he received a prestigious honor. Both times he was genuinely happy to see me and I really felt that in my soul. My Uncle Tommie you ran your race well and it is now time for your well deserved rest.
