Within the span of four short months, Pokemon’s anime television show debuted (September), the legendary Pokemon Red & Blue arrived on Game Boy (September), Hasbro’s Pokemon toys reached retail shelves (October-November), and the original base set of Pokemon TCG all dropped (January 1999). Pokemon quickly replaced the Beanie Babies & Furbys as America’s shiny new toy. In just a few short months, Pokemon would sell out of most merchandise, becoming impossible to find, even for the most diehard of collectors. What’s changed since then? Well, not much. Pokemon’s still impossible to find, and as hot as ever. The obsession that only took months to catch on, has evolved into a cultural mainstay in 2025. It’s hard to imagine a world without Pokemon now. But there was a time when America was unfamiliar with Pikachu. With this video, we will cover the beginning of Pokemon in the US in 1998, chronicling every Pokemon milestone, including the toys, the games, the show, the cards, and more, up until Pokemon’s Second Generation in 2000.
