Women and Photography in the Nineteenth Century

Photography in the nineteenth century is often seen as a men's profession, but women contributed to the trade in a number of ways. They owned studios, took photographs and worked as finishers and retouchers. As consumers, they influenced the way that studios looked and operated, making them into female-friendly spaces. In this talk, Curator Human History Dr Jill Haley explores the various ways that women shaped the profession, both behind and before the camera. The talk took place at the monthly meeting of the Friends of Canterbury Museum on 4 May 2021.
