Thomas Hardy Poetry Reading by Shanid. THOMAS HARDY (1840-1928) Born Thomas Hardy in Higher Bockhampton, Dorset, England. The son of a stonemason, Hardy was educated at local schools in Bockhampton and Dorchester. Apprenticed to an architect on leaving school (1856), moved to London in 1862 but was forced back to Dorset by ill health in 1867. Lack of money forced him to abandon his ambition to go to university and become a priest; he focused instead on his writing. Married Emma Lavinia Gifford in 1874. Gave up architecture when he was commissioned to write 'A Pair of Blue Eyes' (1873). Its success established Hardy as a writer of note; 'Far from the Madding Crowd' (1874), 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' (1891) and 'Jude the Obscure' (1895) followed. These last two novels aroused much criticism for their frank handling of the themes of sex and religion. In disgust, Hardy decided to abandon novel writing at the height of his powers. Like the novels his poetry often focused on man's struggle against an overwhelming fate. Died in 1928 in Dorset. Buried in Westminster Abbey. Widely regarded as one of England's greatest novelists.
