I am a 23-year-old lyric coloratura soprano with a burning passion for my craft and for the distinct role music plays in lifting us out of an ordinary sphere of existence. This is a performance of a relatively new work by the English composer Jonathan Dove from his opera "Flight", which had its premiere at the Glyndebourne Festival in 1998. The composer loosely based his scenario on the same premise adopted by Steven Spielberg for "The Terminal", a movie starring Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones. A refugee is stranded at an unspecified airport, since he does not have a passport or any other legal document allowing him to enter the country legally. A flight controller looks on. In a monologue catapulting straight to a sustained high D with no preparatory note, she rants about the blatherskites and dissolute crowds she witnesses at the airport every day. The mass of travelers tests her nerves and her perfectionist desire for order in life to mirror the order of her occupation. The Refugee catches her eye and the Controller enigmatically sings of his enraptured glances towards her, which she cannot fail to notice. Is she falling in love? Is she merely flattered by the attention? We might never know, as duty calls. She gets back to the work that serves as her oasis.
